The Story
The story is set in a fictional Pittsburg, recently invaded by a group of aliens called Smurgliens. For some reason, the aliens decide that the town’s coffee factory, the Black Forge, should be their base. Now it’s up to Nick and Ashley, the two baristas at Black Forge, to fight against the alien threat and save the planet.
Characters and Setting
The game offers several interesting characters to play with. In general, characters are broken down into aliens, pro-alien humans, and the baristas who want to save their factory (and Earth). The two main fighters are the baristas, who are tough and all “metal” and fight off aliens using hand-to-hand combat.
The aliens are joined by a country music singer, who support their invasion, and a mind-controlled elderly couple who get in the way of the baristas. The regular Smurgliens look like something out of an Area 55 documentary. These little aliens have two different overloads, one that swivels constantly and a tech-minded blob.
The game offers three locations to fight the aliens: a town location in Pittsburgh, inside the Black Forge coffee factory, and on Mars, where the aliens apparently come from and which could be either their home planet or a waypoint.
On top of all this, there’s a mild coffee theme. Characters may fight using coffee mugs and players get to see barista iconography a lot.
Console Specifications
Playing Coffee Crisis requires a Sega Genesis or a Mega Drive. The recommended operating systems are Windows 7 or 10, Mac OSX, or Linux. The game plays on both 64-bit and 32-bit systems. The game will take up storage between 235MB and 250MB. The required minimum RAM is 1GB. Other specs recommended by the developer include 2GB VRAM on the GPU and a 2.6 GHz CPU.
Gameplay
The game is designed very much like a side-scrolling brawler, not dissimilar to classic console games such as Golden Axe or Streets of Rage. Players fight off enemies in three different locales and progress through levels. Moves are limited to fighting, walking, and jumping. Players can learn new fighting maneuvers as they progress.
Coffee Crisis is notably a co-op game. Two players need to collaboratively control the two baristas to progress to new levels and beat the game. The two players need to offer support to each other to avoid getting swamped by aliens. The enemies get random modifiers throughout the game, so play is never boring or monotonous.
Advanced players can unlock achievements as they go along. If two players manage to beat the game, it doesn’t end there. The game makes an additional “Death Metal” level available where the challenge is toughest.
Players can get controllers support for the game. Coffee Crisis is available on Steam, where players can earn trading cards and additional badges.
